It rained three pointers for Purcell in the first half of their season opening basketball game last Tuesday when they pinned a 67-54 loss on the visiting Washington Warriors.
Coach Roger Raper’s club drained six treys in the first quarter alone on their way to a 24-10 cushion heading into the second period.
Mojo Browning led the club with three from downtown while Gavin Nation and Misael Duque both had a pair from beyond the arc.
Nation led the Dragons on offense with 21 points. He was joined in double figures by Nate Willis with 15 and Browning with 14.
The Dragons toted that 14 point advantage into the halftime locker room. Washington out-scored the Dragons 30-29 in the final two frames.
Purcell was shaky at the charity stripe hitting only 15 on 27 attempts.
“It’s always nice to start out your season with a win,” Raper said. “Although, with the win, we have a lot of room for improvement.
“The good thing is that the issues are correctable and are not something our skill level or athletic abilities won’t allow us to correct.
“We played hard and that has to be the standard,” Raper concluded.
Coach David Sikes’ Dragons also put their best foot forward topping the Lady Warriors by 10, 49-39.
Washington jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the first quarter.
The Dragons countered with a 10-3 second period and never looked back out-scoring Washington 33-24 over the final two stanzas.
Leslie Thompson, who finished with 15 points on the night dropped in a pair of treys in the game.
Kora Keith led the Dragons with 16 points.
“We played a solid game,” Sikes said. “The girls started slowly but we got stronger as the game went on.
“We still have to rebound better as a team. We had a few too many turnovers but overall I was pleased with our effort,” the coach said.
“Our girls responded well after Alicia got in foul trouble. We got great minutes from our bench including freshman Leslie Thompson, who scored 15 points,” Sikes said.
“It was good to see Kora Keith running up and down the floor again. She looked like she never missed a beat,” he said.
The Dragons were to host Davis Tuesday and play in the Latta Tournament Thursday through Saturday.
A road trip to Lindsay is on the schedule for next Tuesday.
