Girls host Newcastle Thursday night in Regional action

Coach Toney Cooper’s Dragons, now 19-5 after knocking off Bridge Creek for the district crown Saturday, will host Newcastle at 6 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at The Reimer Center.

Newcastle is 11-13 on the season.

With four players in double figures, Purcell clobbered the Lady Bobcats, 75-30.

Haven Buchanan and Alyssa Thompson led the scoring parade with 14 points each.

Kaylin Vazquez and Jenna Avery both cut the nylons for 10 apiece.

“I’m always excited for the playoffs and coming off of a solid season I was pleased with our opening game draw,” Cooper said.

It was the third time for the Dragons to face off with Bridge Creek and their third victory of the season.

“Playing a team three times in one season presents unique challenges,” Cooper admitted.

“Haven Buchanan continues to lead our team in so many areas and that continued Saturday night. She scored a team high 14 points, along with a few steals, a block and just good momentum shifting plays. Alyssa Thompson matched Haven with 14 of her own.

“Alyssa has improved so much this season,” the coach said. “I love to see her have success on the floor. Kaylin Vazquez had her best offensive game of the season.

“She was aggressive going to the paint and hoping we can see more of that as we progress in the playoffs. Senior Jenna Avery rounded out our quad of double digit scorers with 10.

“Freshman Hallee Buchanan had her best game as a varsity player finishing the game with nine points really taking over in the fourth to seal the win.

“I’m happy with our kids’ effort and good to see them win Districts again this year,” Cooper concluded.

Kobe Freeman led Coach Roger Raper’s Dragons with 32 points but it wasn’t enough as the Bobcats won, 73-61.

Jaime Resendiz and Seth Bunch both finished in double figures with 10 apiece.

“I was proud of how we  competed on Saturday night,” Raper said.

His Dragons out-rebounded Bridge Creek 45-33 including 15 offensive rebounds.

“That is a sign of effort on our part,” the coach confirmed. “Bridge Creek is a very good team and what makes them so good is their ability to shoot the three point shot from multiple players.”

They canned 11 threes to four for Purcell.

“That was the difference in the game,” Raper said. “We had better stats everywhere else but from the three.

“It makes it very difficult to guard when they are making their shots from deep. Five different players made a three for Bridge Creek,” he said.

The Dragons, 11-13, will play Harding Fine Arts Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at The Reimer Center in the Regional Tournament.
