‘Dawgs-CCS game cancelled

Posted

Lexington was scheduled to host CCS this Friday as the 2020 regular season draws to a close.

However, the game has been cancelled according to head coach Keith Bolles.

Big plays spelled big trouble for Lexington once again as the Purcell Dragons beat the ‘Dawgs, 47-6, last Friday night at Floyd West Field.

“We missed some opportunities in the first half,” Bolles said.

“We had some miscues in the secondary early. We just didn’t execute the way we wanted to. We fell behind quickly on some big plays. It was just one of those nights where we have to regroup again and get ready for next week.

“I hate it for these kids but they are learning and growing. We have some young guys out there and we have our seniors, who are helping them learn. I’m proud of my guys because there is never any quit in them.”

Purcell eventually carved out a 34-0 halftime advantage.

Lexington scored its only touchdown with 9:58 left in the third quarter when Chase Johnson hauled in a pass near the sideline from freshman quarterback Ean Caywood and raced 71 yards for the score.

Caywood started his very first varsity game last Friday and Bolles thought he did well under such pressure.

“It’s the toughest position to play,” Bolles said. “Everybody sees the quarterback and the position is always the guy who gets the most attention on the field. I thought he did a fine job under the pressure he was under.”

“It felt great to be a starter to be honest,” Caywood said. “It was nerve wracking but it felt great. I was just glad to be out there and thankful to be able to do it. I just tried to perform to the best of my abilities, the best that I could. I messed up way to many times tonight on little things but I’m learning and I’ll come back and get those corrected.”

Caywood showed his rookie jitters late in the second half. He threw two interceptions inside the 10-yard line as he was striving to get the ‘Dawgs back into the game.

“One thing about football is not everything is going to be perfect,” Caywood said. “You just have to be ready and handle things as they come. I was definitely pressuring myself too much on those two interceptions near the goal line. I should have made better decisions. We need to focus, play our game, and finish every play.”
