Wayne hosts Elmore City

Thursday night rivalry game will get juices going

Wayne and Elmore City will square off Thursday night in a District game at D.S. Zack Powell Stadium at 7 p.m.

It will be a match up of two programs who have plenty of history between the two of them.

“They will get up for this game,” Wayne head coach Brandon Sharp said. “It’s always exciting when we get together and they’ll be excited to play us.”

Elmore is 0-6 up to this point but are battle-tested, according to Sharp.

Offensively Elmore will offer their traditional power run game.

“They’ll run some double tight end sets and we’ll see some flexbone,” Sharp said. “We’ll have to play disciplined defense and have good eyes and not get beat by misdirection plays.”

The coach said Elmore has solid quarterback play and a game changer at the slot receiver position who they’ll move around to get him additional touches of the football.

“We’ll have to limit him as much as we can and get him on the ground as soon as we can,” he said. “Because if he gets into the open he’s a threat to take it to the house any time. We’ve seen him return kickoffs for touchdowns on film.”

Defensively, Elmore will base out of an even front.

They’re physical on the line and athletic in the back end, according to Sharp.

“They will want to get their linebackers downhill,” he said. “We’ll have to play good to be in the game in the fourth quarter. We know if we’re in it good things can happen.”

Velma

Wayne fell 38-0 to Velma-Alma last week.

Wayne had a real game on its hands in the first half and were down 8-0 with about five minutes to play in the second quarter.

Wayne created a turnover but gave it back to Velma on the very next play inside the Wayne 10 yard line.

Velma punched it in twice more before halftime and Wayne wouldn’t be able to mount any type of a comeback.

“They shut our offense completely down,” Sharp said. “We had chances to do something. We had receivers get behind their corners a couple times and didn’t make the play. We have to be able to complete those passes, especially against good teams. We have to do better.”

Defensively, Logan Simpson led Wayne in tackles with 12.

Adolfo Vazquez had seven tackles, three sacks and a fumble recovery at defensive end.

“Adolfo played really well at his end spot,” Sharp said. “I felt like our defensive line did a decent job. We just weren’t able to get our linebackers downhill. Their defensive line made life hard for us.”

Brandon Logston also had seven tackles and a sack.

Notes

Wayne head coach Brandon Sharp nominated Adolfo Vazquez for Heart of Oklahoma Defensive Lineman of the Week.

Wayne is 1-5.
