Lightning forces game to be called one minute into 4th

Washington’s first team offense only ran 12 plays at Little Axe last Thursday night but they made the most of them scoring six times.

The Warriors hammered Little Axe 49-7. The game was called one minute into the fourth quarter due to lightning within 10 miles of the stadium.

“We had already subbed out and were excited to see our younger players get some playing time,” Washington Head Coach Brad Beller said.

“We could see lightning but it was up by Stillwater,” Brad Beller said. “But that cell moved down into the Tecumseh area and Little Axe officials determined we needed to call the game early.”

Creed Barrett was more than capable in the passing department connecting on six of his seven pass attempts, three for touchdowns.

His 68-yard scoring strike to Mason Singletary opened the scoring in the first quarter.

Barrett would later hook up with Kade Babcock for a 43-yard touchdown play and with Nate Roberts for 15 yards, both in the second quarter.

Babcock got into the action both through the air and on the ground with a 10-yard scoring burst in the first period. Hudson Howard also had a four yard scoring run in the first.

Howard later legged one in from 41 yards out in the second frame. Josiah Dickerson closed out the Warrior scoring with a two yard run in the third period.

Beller cited the play of outside linebacker Blake Heiliger and defensive end Hunter Sanders.

Heiliger finished with a season high eight tackles while Sanders was in on five tackles including one for a loss.

“Those two guys play on the weak side together. Little Axe ran to the weak side and they made plays. Both of those guys get tested quite a bit but they elevated their game and have been playing the best football of the season.”

Beller noted the efficiency of Barrett’s passing. He finished the night with 245 yards passing and put the ball in the hands of five different receivers.

“Case Alexander, as dominate as he is on defense, proved how explosive he can be on the offensive side of the ball,” Beller said of the sophomore’s performance against Little Axe.

Up next are the Marlow Outlaws at Reed Field tonight (Thursday) for a 7 p.m. district matchup.

The Outlaws are 5-1, their only setback in week one when turnovers plagued them in a loss to North Rock Creek.

Beller said Marlow runs multiple sets in their spread offensive scheme.

“They run with tight ends and without tight ends. They have a lot of personnel groupings on the offensive side of the ball.

“They also show a lot of different looks in the back end on defense behind their front seven,” the coach said.

Beller said winning on first down will be a key in the game.

“We need to win the turnover battle and take care of the football,” Beller confirmed. “We need to stop them and eliminate the big plays as well.”

Warrior notes:

Washington Head Coach Brad Beller nominated Creed Barrett as the Offensive Player of the Week. Barrett was 6-7 passing for 245 yards and three touchdowns.

Nominated in the offensive line was Canyon Alcorta, who graded out at 80 percent.

Beller nominated Blake Heiliger as the Defensive Player of the Week. He had eight tackles against Little Axe.

Getting the nod in the defensive line was defensive end Hunter Sanders, who had five tackles including one for a loss.
