Walters’ latest

Just because you have an “R” by your name doesn’t make you right.

That’s the case with State Superintendent of Public Education Ryan Walters.

On a nearly daily basis Walters steps in it with respect to public education in our state.

The latest faux pas was when he spent public funds to travel to Washington, D.C. to testify before Congress that Communist China is funding curriculum in the Tulsa School District.

For whatever reason, Walters seems to have zeroed in on Tulsa, running off their superintendent and now accusing the district of accepting China’s money for a Chinese language class.

District officials say teacher salaries and resources were paid by Tulsa Public Schools.

“Students benefiting from our teacher’s supplementary professional development with the International Leadership of Texas have achieved high honors in the past year, including placing in the Oklahoma Chinese Speech competition and the National Chinese Speech Contest,” a Tulsa Public Schools official said.

The class is offered at Booker T. Washington High School.

This is not the first time nor will it be the last that Walters has meddled where he didn’t need to.

Under his leadership, 86 employees of the State Department of Education have left the department.

Instead of accusing Tulsa of consorting with the Chinese or making false statements about meeting so many of the state’s superintendents, maybe Walters could try to improve the huge teacher shortage that the State of Oklahoma is currently weathering.
