Mr. Garrett peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
Thomas Joe Garrett was born March 8, 1928, to Pete and Norene (Gray) Garrett.
He was born and raised in the Stealey Community and graduated with the Wayne Bulldog class of 1947.
On April 23, 1949, Tom married his high school sweetheart, Mary Elizabeth Nitzel. The couple was happily married for 65 years before the passing of Mary.
Tom was a hardworking, dedicated farmer. Farming was his job, hobby and livelihood. He was a “Southern Engineer.” He could fix or repair anything and enjoyed spending time with family teaching them how to be a good mechanic. Tom never threw anything away because he was so resourceful he just knew he would be able to use it for something else.
He loved going on trips to Colorado to stay with his brother but those trips were always short because he didn’t want to be away from the farm that long. He enjoyed picnics with family in the hay field and hosting any and all family events. Desserts were Tom’s favorite, especially getting to enjoy them with family. Tom and Mary enjoyed playing cards with a couple of special close friends for a number of years.
Tom was a charter member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church and a Deacon for over 50 years. He served as a board member for Farm Bureau for 63 years. He considered church family his family and loved spending time and serving with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Norene Garrett; his wife, Mary Garrett; his brother, Fred Garrett; and his sister, Bonnie McCall.
He is survived by his daughters, Bonita Brakefield and husband, Steve, of Wayne and Diana Brooks and husband, Mack, of Blanchard; his sisters, Velma Little of Wayne and Velta Johnston of Yukon; his six grandchildren, Cindy Stone and husband, Rick, of Maysville, Sherry Archer and husband, Jim, of Norman, Darla Turner and husband, Chad, of Blanchard, Tommy Brakefield and wife, Libby, of Purcell, James Brakefield and wife, Kelsie, of Wayne and Cody Brooks and wife, Scheana, of Blanchard; 22 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren along with a host of family and friends.
