The City of Purcell held a meeting September 19 to determine what to do about the city’s radio station.

The city has spent around $50,000 on the radio station that few people even know exists and even fewer listen to.

At the meeting were three citizens who were not affiliated with the city.

One was for keeping the radio station going. One was kind of wishy-washy and the third said the city should punt the station.

City manager Sam Demel reported at the meeting that one person he knows that is in favor of keeping it couldn’t be at the meeting.

That’s three.

The population of Purcell is bumping 7,000.

Three is not a very large percentage.

Another telling sign about interest in the station is the number of surveys that were returned to the city about the station.

The city sends out 4,500 to 4,600 statements every month.

When the survey was sent out to that mailing list, only 96 people responded and Parks & Rec. Supervisor John Blue said the results were mixed.

Again not a very high percentage of the community seems interested in keeping the music playing.

By the way, Blue said the signal only goes out for 10 miles so you can’t even hear it if you are in Washington.

Granted the station is used some during the holidays when people drive around the lake to look at the Lights from the Heart.

Most folks don’t know it exists. But ask anyone who does what the station number is on the dial or what the call letters assigned are from the FCC and they probably can’t tell you.

Blue flatly said the city does not have the personnel to run the station and that it is “a logistics nightmare”.

All signs point to the fact that it’s time for the city to cut its losses and go on about its business of serving the citizens of Purcell in ways for which it does have the manpower and expertise.
