Blue trying to upgrade tennis courts with $100K grant

The City of Purcell Parks and Recreation Department has been chosen as one of five contest finalists for a chance at a $100,000 grant.

The Bobcat Company launched the Parks & Rec Makeover Contest by rebuilding a community park with the help of Bobcat Brand Ambassador Chip Gaines and the National Recreation and Park Association.

The Purcell Parks and Recreation Department nominated the tennis courts at the Purcell Multi-Purpose Center as a project in need of funds.

The courts have not been resurfaced in several years and the netting systems are due for an upgrade, according to Parks & Rec. Director John Blue.

“If awarded the grand prize, these will be the priority items to be done,” he confirmed. “New striping on the court surfacing will also allow for tennis and pickleball.

The contest has a board of judges, but also takes public votes to help choose a winner.

“Anyone can vote once per day until October 3. The website is www.bobcat.com/parkmakeover and features Purcell and four other projects from all over the country,” Blue said.

Blue said other items will be needed for the repairs of the courts and would be announced as potential sponsorship opportunities for the public.

“The lighting system still uses halogen bulbs and the fixtures are gradually failing. Tennis backboards, portable pickleball netting systems and other amenities will eventually be needed,” Blue continued.

Anyone wanting more information about the project or sponsorships can contact Blue by emailing john.blue@purcellok.gov or calling the Purcell Multi-Purpose Center at (405) 527-7227.
