Experienced educator and 1995 Purcell graduate Melissa Madden was appointed to take Holly Baker’s place in Seat 4 on the board of education Monday night.
Her appointment was effective immediately.
Baker resigned her seat last month
“Ms. Madden brings a wealth of educational experience and a deep connection to the Purcell community in her new role,” Superintendent Dr. Sheli McAdoo said.
Madden, who has a passion for rural public schools, has dedicated her career to the field of education, specializing in special education.
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Melissa to the Purcell Board of Education,” Dr. McAdoo confirmed. “Her extensive background in special education, combined with her strong ties to our district as an alumna, will be an invaluable asset as we continue to work towards providing the best possible education for all Purcell students.”
Ms. Madden earned her Bachelor’s degree in Special Education from East Central University in Ada and furthered her expertise by obtaining a Master’s of Special Education from the University of Oklahoma. She also holds Graduate Certifications in Applied Behavior Analysis and Secondary Transition Education, reflecting her commitment to comprehensive and effective support for students with diverse learning needs.
Madden taught for over 20 years as a special education teacher, holding positions as a Special Services Director and Alternative Education Director.
She is the mother of two daughters, Emily and Halle Madden.
“I am honored and excited to serve on the Purcell Board of Education,” Madden said.
“As a graduate of Purcell High School, I am deeply invested in the success of our students and our schools. I look forward to contributing to the continued growth and excellence of Purcell Public Schools.”
In other business Monday night the board approved the bell-to-bell cell phone ban in accordance with state law.
Students may have their phones prior to the first bell rings but cannot use the phones until the last bell rings at the end of the day.
Dr. McAdoo said the entire policy is on the school’s web site.
“I am going to be sending out a letter to parents as well,” she said.
The board renewed the property insurance with the Oklahoma School Insurance Group in the amount of $365,477 and builders’ risk insurance in the amount of $20,799 for 2025-26 with the construction underway at the junior high.
The board authorized Dr. McAdoo as the district’s purchasing agent. She can approve any purchase up to $50,000 and any change orders up to 15 percent without board approval.
Lauren Melvin was assigned duties as district treasurer, Wanda Clark as encumbrance clerk, Jordan Simmons as payroll/personnel clerk and board minutes clerk. They assigned Jessica Heil as activity fund clerk and child nutrition clerk.
