After their second straight State Runner-up finish, Washington’s Warriors open the 2022 season on the road at Vian.

It’s a match up of two top 5 teams in Class 2A that could set up a rematch in the playoffs come November.

The Warriors are coming off a tough scrimmage against Tuttle last Thursday.

Coach Brad Beller, who is beginning his 14th season at the helm of the Warriors, said the scrimmage was a good test.

“Tuttle always has good athletes and are sound in their techniques,” Beller said. “They always give us a good look.

“We were able to see what we do well and also see some of the things we need to work on,” the coach continued. “The good and bad things that went on helped us get better as a team.”

Beller said his 2022 club has a lot of depth and a lot of weapons on offense.

“And on defense we like to have 17-18 kids who can rotate in,” he said. “We had a chance to see some of those younger players to get in with the ones. We now know we can rotate them in and rely on them in important situations.”

Beller had three words to describe Vian.

“Big, strong and fast,” the coach said.

“Year in and year out they are one of the top five or six teams in the state,” Beller said. “They could be the fastest team we face all year.”

In the past the Wolverines have utilized a full house backfield and feature a 2,000 yard running back in DeSean Mays.

“This year they are going to move him around and use him as a wide receiver and some in the slot,” Beller said. “They are going to try to get him the ball as many ways as they can.”

The Wolverine quarterback Diego Ramos has a big arm and can throw the deep ball.

“They have some really good skilled kids they try to get the ball to in space,” Beller said.

“On defense they base out of a 3-4 but they are very multiple,” Beller said. “They want to create havoc in the backfield. We will have to beat them with our discipline and technique. They are so aggressive on the defensive side of the ball. We will have to be prepared for that.”

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The drive time to Vian is 2:31.
