Running clock at Crooked Oak

Washington scored in multiple ways but they had to do it  quickly in their 49-0 victory over Crooked Oak last Friday night.

That’s because after the game’s third play the clock didn’t stop. Period.

“We were finished by 8:20 and got back in time to watch the fourth quarter of games on SKORDLE,” head coach Brad Beller said. “I’ve never been a part of anything like it.

“No one got any playing time,” he said.

Washington ran a total of 12 plays. Crooked Oak ran 23.

The Warriors led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter but had only run one offensive play.

Dawson Thomas returned a kickoff 95 yards for the first Warrior score and Case Alexander took an interception to the crib for the second touchdown.

The one play they ran was a 15 yard run by Kade Norman with Major Cantrell legging in the two point conversion.

One of the two passes Cantrell threw was a 21 yard touchdown to Cage Morris.

Max Wilson scored on a 20-yard run. Jake Coles scampered in from 63 yards out and Wyatt Wilk closed out the scoring on a 34 yard run and added the two point conversion.

Washington rushed for 144 yards on 10 carries and was 2-2 passing for 65 yards.

Mayson Thomas led the tackling chart with four stops. Case Alexander registered three stops and had the pick six. Jaxon Byrd made three tackles while Case Taylor and Kale Brakefield both had two tackles. Taylor recovered a fumble and had one tackle for loss. Likewise, Brakefield had a tackle for loss.

“Mayson Thomas played well defensively for us,” Beller noted.

Washington has a big district game at home tonight (Thursday) when the Lindsay Leopards prowl around Reed Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Senior night will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The Leopards will operate out of a 4-3 set on defense and are very multiple on offense.

“They run a lot of spread and pro formations with two backs,” Beller said. “They are pretty multiple.”

Beller said the key for a Warrior victory is limiting Lindsay’s big plays on offense.

“They have some really good playmakers especially their wide receiver Manuel Aguero,” the coach said. “Their calling card is they want to be physical and run the football.

“On offense we have to control the front line. They are really big up front. If we can control the line we can keep them from pinning their ears back and rushing. We have to remain balanced.”

Warrior notes:

Due to the lack of plays both offensively and defensively in the Crooked Oak game, head coach Brad Beller had no nominees for Player of the Week.
