Dragons bow out of playoffs

Purcell’s Dragons bowed out of post-season baseball play at Elk City last week.

They dropped the first game of the Regional Tournament to McLoud, 5-3 with Boston Knowles taking the loss on the mound. Also pitching in the game were Bryce Blair and Parker Page.

In the second game of the tournament Elk City pinned a 10-0 loss on the Dragons leaving them with an 18-17 season record.

Deaken Dobbins took the pitching loss. Also seeing action on the mound were Kash Knowles and Cole Smedley.

Purcell actually out-hit McLoud 7-5 with Boston Knowles and Smedley leading the way with two hits each.

Also getting hits in the McLoud contest were Page, Kash Knowles and Smedley.

“We got some hits early but just could not get timely hits when we had runners on.  McLoud’s pitcher did a good job keeping us off-balance throughout the game,” head coach Cole Sharp said.

“We battled throughout the game but just had too many free passes and that was the difference in the game,” Sharp said.

Purcell faced Elk City ace and OSU commit Kash Mayfield who no-hit the Dragons.

“Elk City pitched their top 15 draft pick the Mayfield kid who is verbally committed to OSU.  He will make it tough for anybody he faces.  He throws 92-94 m.p.h. from the left side. He was the best pitcher we have faced all year and we have faced some pretty good pitching,” Sharp said.

“I was proud of our guys the way we competed and battled throughout the game. It was a 2-0 ball game going into the fifth.  They just started to time our pitching  up and started to get some timely hits against us,” Sharp concluded.
