Posted

While on routine patrol Monday at 12:40 a.m. in Wayne, Sheriff Deputy Craig Baxter clocked a gray SUV going 55 mph in a 35 mph zone.

When Baxter flipped on his lights the SUV sped up hitting speeds of 120 mph on U.S. 77 going north toward Purcell.

Baxter contacted Purcell Police for assistance with one unit responding.

The SUV went south on SH 74 when it got to Purcell and then onto Interstate 35 where speeds continued in access of 100 mph weaving in and out of traffic.

The SUV, driven by Chance Appleton, 20, of Wynnewood, exited at the Wayne exit and traveled about 1/2 mile west on SH 59 before coming to a stop.

Appleton was taken into custody and charged with unauthorized used of a vehicle, eluding police and driving under suspension.

Sheriff Landy Offolter said the vehicle was stolen out of Garvin County where Appleton also had a warrant out for his arrest.
