Dragons at Little Axe

For the third week in a row, Purcell will play on Thursday night, this time at Little Axe with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

“It’s really weird,” head coach Aaron Dillard said. “We played CCS on Thursday due to Fall Break. We played Washington because it was our Fall Break and Little Axe doesn’t have school on Friday so they play all their home games on Thursday nights.”

The 1-7 Indians will be in a spread offense and show multiple looks on defense but most of the time will be in a 3-4.

“Defensively, they are multiple but an odd front,” Dillard said.

“We just have to try to get better and to be balanced. We need to get lined up and not give them anything cheap.

“On offense we need to take care of the ball, make first downs and touchdowns,” the coach said.

Feeding off a pair of Kash Guthmueller interceptions, Purcell had their eye on an upset of No. 1 Washington at Conger Field last Thursday trailing just 7-0 at intermission.

However, the Warriors came alive to score 33 unanswered points in the finals two quarters to pin a 40-0 loss on the Dragons.

“For the most part our defensive line played well with a couple of exceptions,” head coach Aaron Dillard said.

Guthmueller led the defense with 15 tackles.

“He had two big plays on defense,” Dillard said.

Ryker Fink had 11 tackles followed by Christian Kirk and Boston Knowles, both with 10.

“At least we made it tough on them which is encouraging because their run game is really good,” Dillard said.

Knowles led the rushing chart gaining 77 yards on 23 carries. Guthmueller gained 56 yards on 16 carries.

Dragon notes:

Purcell Head Coach Aaron Dillard nominated Kash Guthmueller as the Defensive Player of the Week. Guthmueller registered 15 tackles and had two interceptions against Washington.

There were no other nominations.
