A tractor-trailer rig that dumped 25 tons of gravel on I-35 last Wednesday morning shut down both lanes of northbound traffic between exit 91 and exit 95.

The rig crossed all northbound lanes and slammed into the cable barrier before rolling.

I-35 was shut down for 10 hours and 10 minutes with traffic from the interstate, SH 77 and SH 74 all diverted through Purcell. Traffic was snarled northbound in Purcell on Green Avenue causing a travel headache from the time of the accident at 10:20 a.m. till I-35 reopened at 8:40 p.m.

Some diesel was also spilled from the rig but no one was reported injured in the accident.

“It departed the roadway to the left and struck the cable barrier and then crossed all lanes on the northbound side and struck the other barrier on the opposite side before rolling,” public information officer for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Preston Cox said.

Authorities cited the driver for reckless driving, saying the load was 4,000 pounds heavier than the limit.

The name of the driver has not been released by the OHP.
