Mr. Dragoo passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family.

Alton Carl Dragoo was born to Marshall Robert and Connie Agnes Dragoo on November 27, 1941 in Lindsay, Okla. His family made their home in Purcell where he attended school and graduated with the proud Dragon class of 1959.

Alton had a tremendous lifelong work ethic which began with his first job as a paper boy. In his early years he worked in the oilfields and owned the DX station in town. Alton worked his way up in the Oil Industry, serving for many years as Union President with Sun Oil Exploration and Production, traveling and speaking at national conventions until he retired from Sun Oil as a field supervisor.

When he wasn’t working, he devoted his time to bettering his community through dedicated service. Over the years, he served three terms on the Purcell City Council and six years as Mayor. He was instrumental in bringing Amtrak to Purcell, as well as the approval, plans and groundbreaking for the new Police Station and the Fire Department. He served on the hospital board, was President of the Main Street Committee, and was awarded the Giving Time Spirit Guardian Award.

He was a leader of the Purcell Masonic Lodge #27 for 58 years, and also, the Grand Lodge and Eastern Star. Alton was also a great man of faith and lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Purcell where he was very involved in giving.

Most of all, Alton Dragoo was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Alton was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Agnes Dragoo; his sons, Billy Eaton and Donnie Eaton; his sisters, Lorraine Grimes and Joyce Curnett, and an infant brother, Stanley Gene.
