Washington held a special ceremony honoring the late Jacie Stephens Cochran, who starred for the Warriors in softball during her high school career. Current Warrior Softball Coach Jace Brewer made the presentation of the shadow box with her jersey and photo to Jacie’s husband, Cale Cochran. One of Washington’s “Favorite Daughters” was honored with a special ceremony last Thursday at the Washington softball diamond.
Jacie Stephens Cochran, who played on a slow-pitch softball state championship team, was an All-State catcher in both fast-pitch and slow-pitch and went on to play Division II softball at Emporia State in Kansas.
That’s where she met her future husband Cale Cochran.
The couple were married July 3, 2018 and 14 months later had conceived their first child.
But tragedy struck July 2, 2020 when during child birth she died from amniotic fluid embolism (AFE).
AFE is the result of an allergic reaction to amniotic fluid entering the mother’s circulatory system that occurs every 2.5 times out of 100,000 births.
Their son, Jaxon Jay Cochran survived and now lives with his father, who is an assistant football coach at Cashion.
Jacie was a second generation Washington graduate. Her parents Jay and Lean Ann Stephens are both Washington grads.
A Warrior all her life, Jacie was a homecoming queen and was tabbed as the WHS Female Athlete of the Year her senior year.
Just like she did in high school, Jacie was a leader and star for Emporia where she made second team All-MIAA her senior season while batting at a .333 clip.
She was 26.
