The Resurrection of Jesus

After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, approached, rolled back the stone and sat upon it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothing was white as snow. The guards were shaken with fear of him and became like dead men. Then the angel said to the women in reply, “Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ Behold, I have told you.” Then they went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce this to his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them on their way and greeted them. They approached, embraced his feet, and did him homage. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

Churches across the area will observe Jesus’ crucifixion and celebrate His resurrection, starting this weekend on Palm Sunday and continuing through Easter.

After all, those two events push aside doctrinal differences and are the most basic beliefs held dear by Christians everywhere.

For parishioners at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Holy Week will commence with Palm Sunday Masses.

That schedule includes English Masses at 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday and a Spanish Mass at 1 p.m. Sunday.

There will be a bilingual Holy Thursday Mass at 7 p.m. April 1.

The worship schedule for Good Friday will include Stations of the Cross (Spanish) at 2:30 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by Stations of the Cross (English) and a bilingual service for Veneration of the Cross.

The church will observe Easter Vigil with a bilingual Mass at 8:30 p.m. April 3.

Masses celebrating the Resurrection of the Lord will be Easter Sunday at 11 a.m. (English) and 1 p.m. (Spanish).

Landmark Church will offer two worship services at 9:15 and 10:55 a.m. on Palm Sunday.

A service, Jesus in the Garden, is planned for 7 p.m. March 31. There will also be a Good Friday service at 7 p.m.

On Easter Sunday, worship will start with a parking lot service at 8 a.m. and two regular services at 9:15 and 10:55 a.m.

In addition, the church will host a community egg hunt at 11 a.m. April 3.

First Baptist Church in Purcell is offering worship services at 10:15 a.m. on Palm Sunday and 6:30 p.m. on Good Friday.

The church has scheduled a Resurrection service at 7:30 a.m. Easter Sunday and an Easter celebration service at 10:15 p.m.

There will also be an Easter breakfast at 8:15 a.m. Registration for the breakfast is due by March 31 and may be made by calling the church office.

On Easter Sunday, Emmanuel Baptist Church will have Sunday School at 9 a.m. and worship at 10 a.m.

First Baptist Church in Wayne is planning worship through music and an inspirational message at 11 a.m. on Easter.

The Easter Sunday schedule at Sunray Baptist Church will include Sunday School at 9:45 a.m., worship at 10:50 a.m. and Children’s Church and an Easter Egg hunt at 11:15 a.m.

Trinity United Methodist Church will observe Maundy Thursday (April 1) at 7 p.m., with worship services at 7 p.m. on Good Friday and 10:30 a.m. on Easter.

Worship on Easter at Christian Life Church in Lexington is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.

An Easter egg hunt and egg drop from a truck ladder will follow the service.

Washington’s First Baptist Church will host an Easter EGGstravaganza at 10:30 a.m. April 3.

In addition to hunting eggs, participants will receive gifts and prizes, hear the Easter story and enjoy a hot dog lunch.

The church has planned Bible study at 9 a.m. Easter Sunday, followed by worship at 10 a.m. and Life Group at 6 p.m.

Worshippers at Memorial Assembly of God will share fellowship and cinnamon rolls from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. on Easter. The church’s worship will be at 11 a.m.

Union Hill Baptist Church is offering two worship services on Easter.

The first at 8:30 a.m. required participants to wear masks.

Those masks will be optional at a 10 a.m. service.

The church choir will perform Messiah Overcame.

Goldsby Baptist Church is moving its Easter Sunday worship to the Washington Warrior Event Center.
