Purcell School patrons stepped up to the plate Tuesday and resoundingly passed a $19.465 million bond proposal.
The measure passed by a whopping 78.59 percent, 492-134 to provide storm shelters, an elementary gym renovation, a competitive gym at the junior high and a new Ag barn, among other things.
The storm shelters will be constructed at the elementary and intermediate buildings.
The competitive gymnasium at the junior high will also serve as a community storm shelter.
“We are thrilled the bond for Purcell Public Schools successfully passed,” Superintendent Dr. Sheli McAdoo said.
“This is a significant victory for our community and will provide the necessary funding for much-needed improvements and updates to our school facilities.
“We are grateful to all who supported the bond measure and worked tirelessly to make this success possible.
“We appreciate you for investing in the future of our students and schools. Together we can continue to create a positive and inspiring learning environment for all,” Dr. McAdoo concluded.
As always, school bond issues must pass by a 60-percent super majority to be approved.
Also Tuesday, Jonathan Wilk defeated Mike Whaley by two votes for the Republican nomination for State Representative in District 20 being vacated by Sherrie Conley, who did not seek re-election.
Wilk garnered 1,668 votes to 1,666 for Whaley.
The results though are unofficial and a recount is a near certainty.
Wilk will face Democrat Mitchell Jacob for the seat in November.
