Janie Cross, 77, of Purcell passed away Saturday, February 3, 2024.

Janie Kaye Hargis was born November 2, 1946 in Pauls Valley, Okla., the baby of four children born to Hamp Willis Hargis and Vervel Essie (Walker) Hargis.  She was raised in Oklahoma City and attended school there, graduating from Carl Albert High School.

Janie was the proud mother of three sons, Brian, Aaron and Nathan. She worked at Joseph Harp Correctional Facility where she taught Computer Science. She retired after more than 25 years of dedicated service.

Janie married her true love, Donald Wayne Cross on October 7, 1988 in Bentonville, Arkansas, and they made their home in Purcell. Away from work, Janie enjoyed tending to her flower gardens and cooking. She kept an immaculate home, always cleaning, and it is said she was somewhat of a “clean freak.”

She loved her fur babies, and cherished her family, and especially her grandchildren. Janie was fun-loving, spirited and fiercely independent. She will be dearly missed!

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Cross;  her parents, Hamp and Vervel Hargis and siblings, Bobbie Joe Hargis and Barbara Ann Hargis.

Janie is survived by her children, Brian King (Diana) of Wellston, Aaron Cross of Purcell and Nathan Cross (Shea) of Purcell; sister, Linda Blevins of Oklahoma City; 11 grandchildren, Aliyah, London, Kamren, Joshua, Olivia, Lanie, Lawson, Morgan, Ruger, River and Mason and a host of other family and friends.

Per Janie’s wish, her family will lay her to rest near her parents at the Hennepin Cemetery, Hennepin, Okla. Memorials may be made in Janie’s memory to the Hennepin Cemetery.
