Charges filed after disturbance at McClain County Detention Center

On the afternoon of September 11, 2020, McClain County Deputies responded to a report of a disturbance within the McClain County Detention Center.

Upon arrival deputies discovered several inmates within one of the housing pods actively acting in a violent and destructive manner.  

Responding deputies also discovered damage to several aspects of the facility’s infrastructure including damage to the security camera system, damage to facility plumbing fixtures and damage to the facility’s Wi-Fi network components.

Deputies also observed inmates had set fire to a book and blankets within the facility as well as active attempts by inmates to breach the security glass into the control room of the facility using a metal drain cover that was removed from a floor drain within the facility.

Deputies made entry into the Detention Center as well as the effected housing unit and executed a lock-down of the facility.  A subsequent investigation into the incident identified several inmates that participated in the unrest.

As a result of the investigation, criminal charges were filed on five inmates for various charges to include riot, incitement to riot, arson, destruction of public buildings and possession of contraband inside the jail.

The inmates charged as a result of the incident were identified as Jonathan Miller, Calvin Mize, Colton Vickrey and Nicholas Smith.

Interviews with the involved inmates were conducted.

The inmates cited a delay in commissary delivery that day as well as disappointment regarding the speed in which their cases were moving through the court system as a reason for the disturbance.

Damages to the detention center totaled more than $2,600, according to jail officials.
