Consider it a good start.
The first monies generated by a lodging tax hit the city’s bank account last week.
The 5 percent tax generated $12,553.76 in its first month, according to city treasurer Victor Lohn.
That money, which is earmarked for tourism promotion, will remain untouched for a few months as the balance grows with successive deposits.
In the meantime, a 7-member lodging tax committee will consider how best to expend funds and promote tourism.
Serving on the committee are Purcell city council member Theda Engert, Parks & Recreation Director John Blue, city manager Dale Bunn, Heart of Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce Director Elisabeth Baker, merchant Cindy Millsap, citizen-at-large Allen Eubanks, former owner of Purcell Ace Hardware.
Voters gave overwhelming approval – 203 to 103 – for the lodging tax in February.
The tax went into effect on July 1.
