Thanks to the assistance of two Good Samaritans, a 57-year-old female who fell off the Wanette Bridge Monday was rescued from the river bottom.
McClain County Sheriff Lt. Jeff Poteet said he could see the victim sitting in the sand after Justin Hulce of Wanette and Levi Alexander of Purcell pointed her out to him.
The victim, Michelle McGlory of Byars, was mediflighted to Oklahoma City for treatment after an heroic effort by Hulce, Alexander and Poteet rescued her from the river bottom.
“With the assistance of these two good Samaritans, Emergency Responders were able to safely reach the victim and remove her from the riverbed for emergency treatment in an expedient manner,” Poteet said. “Without their generous help the rescue and treatment of the victim would have been critically delayed.”
In his report, Lt. Poteet said he was the only first responder immediately on scene and was in a quandary as to how to get to the victim.
With the guidance of Hulce and Alexander, they made their way through thick vegetation to Soggy Bottom Trails. The men led Poteet through heavy vegetation and difficult terrain to McGlory where they administered first aid.
They loaded McGlory in the back of Poteet’s pickup and she was taken to the location of Wadley’s EMS where MediFlight transported her to OU Medical Center.
There was no late report on her condition, however she was able to answer questions from first responders.
Sheriff Department officials estimated the fall from the bridge to the riverbed to be 20-30 feet.
