Two lopsided losses at Regionals ended Wayne’s baseball season sooner than hoped.
The Bulldogs were no match for Arapaho-Butler, which won 17-0 on April 30, or Wilson, which won 11-1 the same day.
Coach Shane Collins’ team, which played through adversity all season, finished with 10 wins and 16 losses.
Wayne committed six errors in the first game and six more in the second, leading to 14 unearned runs by the opposition.
The team had more errors (12) than hits (4).
“Yes, two bad losses,” Collins told The Register. “Arapaho, we were just out manned ... they are very good baseball team that is very well-coached. We played hard; just wasn’t much we were going to get done on them.
“We didn’t play real well against (Wilson). We had six errors in the field, which is a recipe for disaster. Sloan (Jackson) was the best player on the field for us all day in both games.”
Jackson, Wayne’s catcher, had the Bulldogs’ only hit against Arapaho-Butler and stole a base.
Wayne advanced to the Class A-I Regional with two convincing wins over Clayton at Districts, out-scoring their opponents by a combined score of 19-4.
“The season had its ups and downs for us when we played with a lot of different rosters and kids playing different positions,” Collins said. “But they never griped or hung their heads. They adapted, played hard and it ultimately paid off with a District championship.”
Collins referred to seniors Ben Fisher, Sloan Jackson and Lane Lewis “all glue guys.”
“They did a lot this season and will be very missed in the lineup,” he said. “Some of the bright spots were young guys like Langstyn McClendon, who had a great year and will only get better. Brody Kemp is another sophomore who had a great year led the team in batting average.
The Bulldogs will also return Layne Canfield, Levi Alexander, Dylan Jackson, Jake Turner, Xander Gavia, Gavin Genereux, Rhett Albert, Dalon Parker and Jude Tanquary
“All of those guys got significant playing time this season and will look to add to their roles next season,” Collin said.
