Wayne opens season at Konawa

The Wayne football team begins the 2022 season Friday night at Konawa.

Coming off of two scrimmages, the Bulldogs are excited to play a real game.

“We’ve had good effort and the guys are excited about playing,” Wayne head coach Brandon Sharp said. “We have a bunch of young guys who aren’t real experienced, but they’re trying hard and soaking up what we’re coaching.”

The Tigers have a talented quarterback who the Bulldogs will have to contend with.

“If we don’t play sound defense the quarterback will hurt us,” Sharp said. “They run sprint outs and give him the run-pass option.”

The Tigers operate out of multiple formations and threw the ball about 60 percent of the time against Walters.

Defensively they run a 4-4 scheme. They have a physical defensive tackle who causes problems in the middle.

“You have to double-team him, which frees up the mike linebacker,” Sharp said.

The quarterback plays safety and runs the alleys to make plays.

Scrimmage

During the Tishomingo and Carnegie scrimmage the Bulldogs were able to move the ball while on offense.

“We moved the ball up and down the field but we fumbled twice in the red zone,” Sharp said. “We were able to hold both Tish and Carnegie out of the end zone.”

Sharp said his team also came out of the scrimmage healthy.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Konawa.
