Thursday kick vs Badgers

The Wayne football team will take their show on the road again Thursday when they travel to rival Elmore City.

Kickoff against the Badgers (0-6) is set for 7 p.m.

Wayne head coach Brandon Sharp said the Elmore City offense will be a challenging unit to defend against.

It will start with Elmore City’s running back, Dawson Milligan.

“Their tail back is electric,” he said. “If he gets a crease he can take it to the house any time. We’ll have to slow him down.”

Sharp was also complimentary of the Badger’s quarterback, Owen McConnell.

“He does a really good job of running the offense,” he said.

Elmore City head coach Larry Lewis will use multiple formations to try to get defenses out of alignment so his team can gain the upper hand.

“They’ll throw all kinds of formations at you and try to out-hat you,” Sharp said. “Coach Lewis does a good job with that.”

Defensively, Sharp expects to see a 50 front from the Badger defense but wouldn’t be surprised to see them slide into a 4-3 front as well.

“We’ll have to prepare for everything,” he said. “But at this point of the season we’ve seen all the fronts. We’ll just need to go by our rules and be aggressive and physical. If we do those things we’ll have a chance.”

Velma-Alma

Wayne lost a tough one against Velma-Alma last Thursday, 32-14, with an injury thinned ball club.

Velma opened the scoring in the second quarter on a two-yard run, but failed on the two-point try.

They carried the six-point lead into the second half before scoring again on a 40-yard pass in the third quarter that was nearly intercepted by Wayne.

The Bulldogs answered on a 65-yard pass from Eli Stottlemyre to Max McGlory. Wayne missed the ensuing tow-point try.

Wayne wasn’t finished and scored again on an 18-yard run by Stottlemyre in the fourth quarter.

Stottlemyre found Jeremiah Peterson in the end zone for the two-point try to bring the game to 18-14.

McGlory finished the game with five catches for 149 yards and a touchdown.

Velma scored again with 4:00 to play to put the game out of reach for good.

They scored their final touchdown with 53 seconds left on a 30-yard bomb that was nearly intercepted.

“The kids played hard and I’m proud of them for the way they responded after last week,” Sharp said. “We were in it in the fourth quarter and had opportunities but just came up a little short.”

On defense, Stottlemyre registered 11 tackles while Peterson had 10 tackles and a sack.

Logan Idleman and Lukas Hannah each had nine and Jake Turner had five tackles and a fumble recovery.

“Our messaging for this week to the team has been let’s get to the fourth quarter and see what happens.”

Wayne is 1-5.

Notes

Head coach Brandon Sharp nominated Max McGlory for Heart of Oklahoma Offensive Player of the Week.
