Wayne in the doldrums

Two losses added last week and a host of cancellations

Posted

The Wayne Bulldogs haven’t quite gotten their footing this baseball season, but Mother Nature isn’t doing them any favors, either.

Monday’s game with Wynnewood was canceled due to heavy rain and wet fields. Last Thursday’s game with Alex was also axed.

Add Thackerville to that list of canceled games as they were called off Tuesday  morning.

Last week, Wayne lost to Rush Springs on Tuesday, 21-18. They had 15 hits in the loss, including three apiece from Rhett Kennedy, Andy Lee and Ethan Mullins.

They also had 14 RBIs in the loss with Mullins’ four leading the team. Jaxon Dill had three.

Friday’s game with Pauls Valley was another heartbreaker, falling to the Panthers 10-5.

Pitching seems to be the Achilles heel for the Bulldogs.

“In both games we came out and threw well for the first two or three innings. Then we have an inning where we just cannot hit the strike zone and we give up several runs. Then, we get back to throwing strikes,” head coach Shane Collins said.

Mullins and Kennedy were leaders at the plate for the Bulldogs in the game with Pauls Valley. Each had two hits.

Kennedy had an RBI and scored two runs while Mullins had two RBIs and scored one run.

Kaleb Madden scored Wayne’s other two runs.

Collins singled out Kennedy, Mullins and Jr. Perez.

“Ethan has been great for us at short stop and Rhett, too, at catcher. And, Jr. Perez is holding it down in the outfield.

“I’ve put a lot on his shoulders, asking him to track down all of the balls hit out there and he does a good job doing just that.”

Wayne is scheduled for games with Lexington and Asher today (Thursday). The site was to be either Lexington or Asher, but was not yet decided as of press time.
