Wayne hosts final scrimmage

Posted

Wayne’s final scrimmage of the preseason will be tonight (Thursday) when the Bulldogs host Tishomingo and Carnegie at 6 p.m.

Fans are asked to bring either soap or a towel for entry.

Wayne traveled to Empire for last week’s scrimmage.

While Wayne head coach Brandon Sharp saw some things he liked there is plenty to work on before the season begins next week.

“We still have a long way to go,” he said. “We need to get a lot better and the coaches need to keep coaching them.”

He said there were times the defense was out of alignment and missed their gap responsibilities.

“We had a couple busts with guys missing assignments,” he said. “We gave up a couple big plays.”

Even though there were mistakes, Sharp was pleased the defense didn’t give up any touchdowns.

“We kept them out of the end zone.”

Offensively the Bulldogs struggled to run between the tackles but found more success running on the outside.

“The outside zone at times hit pretty good,” Sharp said. “When we ran the jet, bubble passes and the outside zone it felt pretty good.”

Wayne also found some success in the passing game and scored two touchdowns through the air.

“We feel good about the opportunities we have in front of us,” Sharp said.
