Wayne hits the court

Posted

The Wayne cage teams are set to hit the court this Saturday hosting Alex at 6:30 p.m. to kick off the 2020-21 season.

According to head coach Josh Trent, expectations for the Lady Bulldogs are high.

With only one player lost to graduation, Abigail Lee, Trent is optimistic about the season.

He has plenty of returning talent as well as some newcomers that will contribute heavily.

Freshmen Faith Brazell, Daliyah Fuentes and Haylee Durrence will be immediate helpers for Trent and his team.

“We’ve basically returned the whole team and gained three really good freshmen,” Trent said.

Seniors Allie Walck and AJ Gray are four year starters that Trent expects to continue to be heavy contributors this season.

Also back are Kaylee Madden and Lorensa Martinez, the Lady Bulldogs’ leading scorers.

Last year Trent’s Lady Bulldogs fell to Coalgate in Regional play, and finished the season with a 14-11 record.

Trent’s goal for this season is to improve on defense which will help their transition offense.

Head Coach Josh Trent is excited for his returning talent for the 2020-21 season. Lost to graduation were James Spencer, Ethan Salsman, Kris Welch and Austin Box. All four were helpers for Wayne.

Returning for the Bulldogs are work horses Ethan Mullins and Brannon Lewellling. Both juniors were leading scorers for the Bulldogs last season.

Trent is excited to be adding Talon Trent, a lanky senior, at the guard/post position.

“We lost a couple of seniors and they will definitely be missed. But, we have our leading scorers back in Mullins and Lewelling. We also added Talon Trent who will be a helper on both ends of the court,” Trent said.

Kaleb Madden, a sophomore, has stood out for the coach, in his seventh season with the Bulldogs.

“Kaleb has improved a ton over the summer and in the off season. He will help on both offense and defense.”

Last season the Bulldogs were beat out in District play by Elmore City. They finished with a 10-14 record.

Trent is excited for the season as his team will be improved offensively, but the bench will not be as deep as in the past.
