Washington Cheer takes State

Posted

Washington Cheer captured their 15th Cheer State Championship November 11 at Moore High School.

Forty-one teams competed in the Regional Championship November 4 in Jay, OK, with 15 teams including Washington and Purcell qualifying to move on to the Game Day State Championship last weekend.

Once there, the teams competed in three phases of competition including band dance, crowd leading cheer and school fight song.

After the preliminary round, the field was narrowed to the Top 6 teams who competed again for the final placings. The final 6 teams were  Washington, Bethany, Bridge Creek, Community Christian, Mount St. Mary and Lone Grove.

The Warriors performed a flawless routine with high energy to finish at the top of 4A.

The Washington community showed up at the competition in force and was extremely loud when cheering for the Warrior Cheer squad.

“Performing for that crowd was one of the best feelings I have ever felt!” said senior Taylor Hayden.

Halle Andrews added, “Winning State is a feeling I don’t think anyone can describe. All I know is right when we ended the most perfect routine, and I saw all of my coaches reactions and their excitement, I knew we won at that moment!” the senior continued, “This team wanted it so bad and it showed when we performed!”

The State title marks Washington’s second Game Day Championship in three years. The program adds these trophies to the 13 performance State Championships they have previously won to bring their total to 15 titles making them the second most successful cheer program in Oklahoma history throughout all classes behind Tuttle High School with 18 titles.

Senior Maddie Green credits the team’s  success to their coaches Sheila LeForce, Jeff LeForce, Madison Monks and Craig Hallmark who have been with the cheer program since its first State Championship in 1999.

Senior Haven Brewer said, “The team is also grateful for a very supportive administration that has always treated cheer like every other sport at the school.”

The championship team consists of nine seniors including Halle Andrews, Kendall Bolser, Haven Brewer, Maddie Green, Taylor Hayden, Emmalea Harding, Emily Madden, Lexi Ralls and Ally Hobbs; four juniors including Grace Grimsey, Leksi Rector, Rielyn Scheffe and Pailsey Taylor.

Also, five sophomores including Bailey McAlister, Kynsli Hyde, Scarlett Tontz, Ashlynn Beller, Sabrina Posey and Elizabeth Dunn; as well as four freshmen including Stevie Haynes, Emma Musgrove, Sutton Goodrum and Sophie Perkins.
