The Washington Warriors had a lighter week on the diamond than the prior one, partly because of the extreme heat in Central Oklahoma.
Jones
Washington beat Jones 14-0 August 18.
Payton Blackburn got the start in the circle and struck out five batters while giving up two hits.
Leading 3-0, Washington scored six runs in the third inning to blow the game open. They put it away with a five-run fourth inning.
Bentli Brantley went 3-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles. She had two RBIs.
Senior Kinley Taylor had a home run and Hadley Beard tripled.
Jasey Baker was 2-2 with an RBI.
Purcell
Washington picked up their first loss of the season in the Heart of Oklahoma Softball Tournament (HOOT), a 3-2 loss to Purcell.
Blackburn started the game but was relieved by Ellie Musgrove in the first inning.
Junior Ally Dennis finished the final two innings.
“Purcell did a good job of keeping us off balance,” Warrior head coach Tylor Lampkin said. “They played unbelievable defense and forced our hand and we made mistakes.”
Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. Purcell scored the go-ahead run in the second and the game went scoreless from there.
Friday’s games at Washington of the HOOT were canceled due to Mother Nature’s relentless heat as of late.
Bridge Creek
The Warriors came back on a mission Saturday for an 8-0 win over Bridge Creek.
“We bounced back on Saturday and we hit it extremely well,” Lampkin said. “We hit it around. It might not show up in the stats but we hit the ball hard and if it wasn’t a hit it was a loud out.”
Kinzlee Pogue went 1-3 and had two RBIs.
Brantley had another solid game at the plate, going 2-3 with an RBI. She also scored twice.
Blackburn was 1-1 at the dish with a ribbie.
Dennis got the nod to start in the circle and threw three innings of scoreless ball. She struck out one batter while walking one and she gave up no hits.
Blackburn came on in relief and struck out three.
As a team, the Warriors were error free.
“We’ve been playing solid defense, but not great,” Lampkin said. “We need to polish up a few things there and get it cleaned up if we want to get where we want to be at the end of the season. We need to communicate a little better on defense.”
The Warriors are 10-1 this season.
