Bring home 15th gold ball in slow-pitch

The Washington Warrior softball program added some more hardware to the trophy case after they won the Class 5A State slow-pitch softball tournament May 5.

Washington beat Elgin, Fort Gibson and Lone Grove in that order at the Ballfields at FireLake to claim the title.

“It was an awesome day for sure,” said head coach Tylor Lampkin, who has led the Warriors’ to three slow-pitch softball titles, including the last two.

The latest title puts Washington ahead of Davenport as Oklahoma’s all-time leading school for slow-pitch titles.

The Warriors also lay claim to the current championship trophies for both fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball.

“It’s been an unbelievable year for this bunch,” head coach Tylor Lampkin said. “The things they’ve been able to accomplish are pretty awesome.”

Elgin

Washington beat Elgin 13-7 to open the State tournament.

The Warriors put three runs on the board in the first inning when Raelee Adkins homered. Adkins was 3-4 with three home runs and had seven RBIs in the game.

Washington put up one run in the fourth before hanging a six spot in the fifth inning. Elgin got on the board with four in that inning.

Washington scored their final three runs in the top of the sixth. Elgin scored three in the bottom of the seventh but no rally was to be had.

Daphne Palumbo went 2-4 with two homers.

Ava Salcedo and Kinzlee Pogue also hit home runs.

Fort Gibson

Washington beat Fort Gibson 11-2 in the semi-final game.

Washington scored three runs in both the first and third innings.

Fort Gibson scored one run in both of those innings.

The Warriors closed out the game with a five-run fifth inning.

Despite the two wins, Lampkin didn’t think it was his club’s best softball.

“I didn’t think we played that great against Elgin or Fort Gibson,” he said. “We played good enough but I think we were pressing a little.”

Julie Hoehner, Pogue and Adkins all had home runs in the game.

“We had quite a few girls hit it well all day,” Lampkin said. “I was super proud of Briley (Beller) for the way she pitched it. And Abby Byrd came in and did a great job and finished when we had some subbing.”

Lone Grove

Washington beat Lone Grove 18-3 in the finals.

“We really relaxed and played well once we got to the finals,” Lampkin said. “We had been looking forward to playing them all year.”

Washington took the wind out of Lone Groves sails early and led 11-0 after the second inning.

Washington tacked on four more in the third and three in the fourth.

Emersyn Massey had a huge game, going 4-4 with three home runs. She had three ribbies and scored four times.

Hadley Beard homered twice while going 3-3 with five RBIs.

“Hadley came up with some big hits, coming in as a freshman,” Lampkin said.

Kelby Beller went 2-3 with two RBIs. She also homered in the top of the fourth.

“Getting to see Kelby homer in her last at-bat at Washington was awesome to see,” Lampkin said.

Ava Salcedo and Hoehner also homered.

“The  overall team effort and play during the day was pretty special for sure,” Lampkin said.  “I’m super proud of all our kids.”

The Warriors will graduate four seniors of this year’s team. They are Beller, Hoehner, Massey and Presley Lucas.

“One of the best moments of the day was watching those four seniors play the way they did and enjoy everything,” Lampkin said. “They have been with me for so long.”

The Warriors finished the season with a 29-5 record.

Notes

Kelby Beller, Emersyn Massey and Julie Hoehner were selected to the Large West All-State team.

Presley Lucas was selected as honorable mention.
