Warriors staying Hot

Posted

Washington’s red-hot streak continued Monday evening and they added two more wins to their resume.

They defeated Cache (20-8) and Hobart (15-3) to bring their season record to 18-8.

The lone blemish on their record in the stretch was a 21-6  loss last Thursday to 6A No. 1 Southmoore

“We played better Monday than we played against Southmoore,” head coach Jace Brewer said. “We didn’t play well against them and we didn’t fight. Sometimes we act like a young team. That’s why you need to play this sport as much as you can.”

Southmoore aside, Washington has been consistently on fire offensively and playing some of the best ball the school has seen in recent memory.

The team has an astounding 127 home runs.

“It’s a hard lineup to face with five girls having about 20 home runs each,” Brewer said.

The five Brewer spoke of are Ellie Loveless (19), Elly Allison (18), Emma Curry (26), Maggie Place (23) and Tinley Lucas (18).

In the Cache game Washington got homers from Halle Andrews, Emma Curry (2), Ellie Loveless (2), Tinley Lucas and Emjay Lucas.

Curry and Loveless both had grand slams.

“Emma Curry is arguably one of the best hitters to ever play here,” Brewer said.

While the team nears the home stretch of the season there is optimism for a deep post-season run but they’re not complacent.

“Every game matters with these kids that are new to slow pitch,” Brewer said. “We need to continue to grow and we have to get better at the game and tougher at it. We have to continue to progress as a ball club but we’re on the right track.”

While the offensive production has been eye-raising, the Warrior defense has also been strong and it starts in the circle with Lucas at pitcher.

“Tinley has a great feel for pitching,” Brewer said. “She embraces the position and there’s a craft to it. You have to know what you’re doing and she enjoys it.”

Washington begins their post-season play Thursday at home. They will play the loser of the 11 a.m. game between Lexington and Hennessey.

“We’re into the final stretch. We want to make the most of it.”
