The Washington baseball team defeated Victory Christian 6-5 and 6-0 in the Super Regional tournament May 7 to punch their ticket to State.
They are set to play Dewey in the first game today (Thursday) at 6:30 p.m. at Norman North High School.
“They are a very scrappy team with no quit in them,” said head coach Brad Lucas. “They pitch it well and can hit.”
Victory Christian
The Warriors encountered a talented Victory Christian squad.
“They were tough,” Lucas said. “They swung the bat really well.”
The first game was a 10-inning marathon that ended in a walk off double for the Warriors.
“It was an exciting game,” Lucas said.
Victory Christian got on the board first when they scored a run in the opening inning.
Washington answered with two in the third before getting three more in the sixth.
Victory Christian tied the game with their four-run seventh inning.
The game was scoreless until the 10th.
Jackson Rico led off the inning with a double down the left field line and Washington had something cooking.
Jack Brady stepped up and double to left-center field.
“It was clutch,” Lucas said.
Rico and Brady combined to go 5-9 on the day with two doubles and four RBIs.
Dawson Thomas was 1-4 with a solo home run in the sixth.
Owen Andrews started the game and went seven innings, striking out six batters.
Liam Keltner finished out the game, striking out three while giving up one hit.
“Our pitching kept us in it,” Lucas said.
Game two
Spencer Barton toed the rubber in the second game for the Warriors.
“He threw one of his gems,” Lucas said. “He threw it really well and kept their batters off balance.”
Barton struck out 11 batters while only allowing one hit and giving up a walk.
Rico stayed active at the plate, going 1-3 with a home run and three RBIs.
His homer came in the first inning with two runners on base.
Keltner was 2-3 and Yariel Bello was 2-4.
Lucas likes his team’s mind set as they prepare for the State tournament.
“Our practices have been great,” he said. “Everyone is focused and we’re locked in.”
Washington is 30-7 this season.
