The Washington Warrior fast-pitch softball team is 5-0 to start the season and on the back of some impressive defense.
The Warriors have yet to allow a run this season.
“We’re pitching it really well right now and doing a good job there for how early it is in the season,” head coach Tylor Lampkin said. “We’re not giving up many free bases.”
The Warriors are utilizing a four-girl rotation with senior Ava Salcedo, sophomores Abby Byrd and Ally Dennis, and freshman Payton Blackburn.
“I like where we are staffing it right now,” Lampkin said.
He said Salcedo is benefitting from getting some innings under her belt early and Dennis hasn’t given up a walk this season.
The Warriors are also having no problem putting runs on the board, scoring 61 runs in the five games.
That’s a 61-0 difference in scores from Washington and their opponents.
“We have quite a few girls hitting it well right now,” Lampkin said. “Ava, Julie (Hoehner) and Presley (Lucas) are hitting it really well. And it’s great to have Presley’s leadership out there.”
Salcedo has four homers this season, already.
Sulphur
Blackburn took the win in the Sulphur game, an 11-0 decision.
She struck out four and walked two, while only allowing one hit.
Emersyn Massey was 2-3 with an RBI.
Kinzlee Pogue was 1-3 with a double and two ribbies.
Little Axe
Ally Dennis started in the circle, picking up a win after a 19-0 final.
She struck out five batters in her no-hitter.
Washington had an 11-run first inning.
Salcedo homered twice and Hoehner put one out as well.
Hoehner, Pogue, Lucas and Raelee Adkins all doubled.
Salcedo also tripled and finished with six RBIs.
Jones
Blackburn got another win against Jones in a 7-0 final.
She struck out nine batters while giving up two hits and walking two in seven innings.
Salcedo homered again was 2-3 with two RBIs and a walk.
Lucas and Hoehner were also both 2-3 with an RBI apiece.
Crossings
Washington won 11-0 and 13-0 in a double header against Crossings on Monday.
Salcedo and Dennis teamed up in the circle. Salcedo struck out five and Dennis sat down three.
The Warriors got offensive production from Massey, Hoehner, Pogue and Adkins, who all double and combined for five ribbies.
In the second game, Blackburn and Byrd teamed up for a no hitter in the five inning game. Blackburn struck out five batters, while each pitcher only gave up one walk.
Salcedo was 2-3 with a triple and three RBIs.
Freshman Bentli Brantley with an RBI and scored three times.
“I liked how we took care of business for these four District win. It puts us in a good position,” Lampkin said. “Our schedule will get tougher and we’ll get tested, but we’ve been pretty fortunate up to this point.”
JV
The Washington JV team competed in the Ripley tournament last week and brought home the consolation championship.
“They played against some really good teams and lost two games by one run each to a couple of teams who will likely be State tournament teams,” Lampkin said. “We have some young girls who are pushing others and competing in the program. I’m proud of the JV team for competing the way they did.
Washington will next host Pool B in the Heart of Oklahoma Softball Tournament.
