Warriors post strong week on hardwood

The Washington boys collected two conference wins to level their season record to 10-10.

First they defeated 4A’s No. 18 team Pauls Valley, 65-56, on Friday night.

They turned around and beat Comanche 54-22 at home on Saturday in a make-up game.

Head coach Trevor Smith said he was pleased with his team.

“They played really well and I was proud of their defensive effort,” he said. “Paul’s Valley’s big man has been playing really well and our post guys did a good job on him.”

The Warriors jumped out on the Panthers early and finished the first quarter with an eight-point lead.

They never looked back after the first quarter and maintained about a 10-point lead for the remainder of the game.

Washington had scoring across the board, with four players in double figures.

Jeremiah Tontz and Teagen Foster lead the team with 16 each.

Mason Adams had 15 and Jack McKimmey finished with 10 points.

“It was a big-time team win,” Smith said. “We did a great job rebounding in the game. I told the team if they could just out-rebound them by one, we’d win the game. After the game I looked and we got them by one rebound.”

Comanche

Playing on short rest, Comanche visited the Warrior Event Center Saturday.

It was a make-up game from earlier in the season when Comanche had a flu outbreak.

“You never know what to expect on a quick turnaround,” Smith said. “We started slow and they were up 8-3 before I called a time out in the first quarter. They only scored one more point in the half after that.”

Washington blew the game wide open with a 22-point third quarter.

“We got it going offensively and it was over after that,” Smith said. “We played well in the second half and shot it well.”

Adams had a game-high 16 points in the game.

Washington will finish out the Conference schedule with Lindsay, Marlow and Purcell before hosting Dove Science in the District tournament.

Girls

Head coach Kale Simon’s girls team gutted out a win over Pauls Valley in their only action of the week, 39-27.

“It was an ugly, gutsy win and we had to earn our keep,” Simon said. “It was not a fun game but it will pay dividends later.”

Preslee Johnson scored a game-high 19 points in the win.

“We didn’t ever get into a flow on offense but credit Pauls Valley for that,” Simon said. “I’m proud that we executed after we struggled in the fourth quarter when they cut it to three. We had to be a team and execute offensively.”

The win put the Warriors back in the winner’s circle after they dropped two games in a row.

“We have faced some struggles and adversity the last couple of weeks,” Simon said. “But we’ve learned from it and it will pay dividends for us moving forward this season.”

Washington is 17-3 this season.
