The Washington Warriors earned their first win of the season with a 57-37 victory over Davis last Friday.

The Warriors got out to a hot start and established a 20-point lead by halftime.

“We played well against Davis,” said first-year head coach Trevor Smith. “We led by 20 at halftime and were able to coast the rest of the way.”

The Warriors scored 18 points in the first quarter and followed that up with a 17 point second quarter.

Jaden Cornelius led the team in scoring with 13 points.

Sam Hedenberg joined him in double figures with 11 points.

Washington’s scoring was pretty balanced in the game.

“We had several guys see the ball go in,” Smith said.

Purcell

Washington dropped their home opener to Purcell, 64-46.

“They are a good team and probably a State tournament team,” Smith said. They made a run in the second quarter and that got us. We competed with them in the first.”

It was a ruckus atmosphere for a team with a majority of its players seeing major varsity minutes for the first time.

“It was a great atmosphere and a fun, good learning experience,” he said.

Hayden Hicks led the way with 18 points. Cash Andrews had 10.

The team is still gelling and learning a new system under Smith, who spent the last seven seasons at Big Pasture before coming to Washington.

“We’ll be incorporating the football guys into the team over the break,” Smith said. “They’re still learning the system, how to guard and getting chemistry with Hayden and Cash.

“We’ll get a lot done over the break and I feel like my teams in the past have gotten better over the break.”

Smith said his team has a lot of upperclassmen but they’re a little inexperienced in varsity, after playing JV the last couple of years.

He sees strengths in the team in their depth, defense, shooting and pressing defense.

“We’re pretty deep and play 8-9 guys right now,” he said. “When the football guys get back we’ll have 10-12. We’ll play fast and our full-court press will be a weapon for us.”

The Warriors are 1-1 heading into the Latta tournament this week. A bracket can be found on page 4B.
