Senior night ceremonies set for Friday

Washington High School will host Lindsay Friday night at the Washington Event Center.

It will also be Senior Night for the basketball teams. The ceremony begins at 5:55 p.m. prior to the girl’s game at 6:30 p.m.

Kale Simon’s Lady Warriors defeated Purcell 72-17 in a decisive win last Friday.

The Warriors’ smothering defense held the Dragons to three points or less in three of the four quarters.

“We defended well and played really hard,” Simon said.

Offensively, Washington got out to a quick start with 24 points scored in the first quarter.

Bentli Brantley led all scorers in the game with 13 points.

Preslee Johnson joined her in double figures with 11 and Kelby Beller and Harper Johnson both had eight points.

Simon liked what he saw on offense.

“When we moved the ball and were simple, our efficiency level goes up at a high rate,” he said. “As much of a blessing as it is to be a part of a successful program, the sacrifice that these girls make in turning down good shots for great shots is something I’m proud of when they do it.”

When asked what they could have done better in the game, Simon said, “We need to create the habit of continuing to be intentional after we make big runs or have good stretches, as opposed to relaxing after those moments.”

Washington is 16-1 this season.

Boys

Washington’s boys lost to Purcell 46-39 in a defensive slug out.

“We have been pretty good defensively this season,” said head coach Trevor Smith. “We have gotten to rely on it and hang our hat on defense. Purcell has done the same.”

Washington ended the first quarter with a 9-8 lead but Purcell took a two-point lead into halftime, 18-16.

“I expected a low scoring game because the two teams know each other so well,” Smith said. “The margin for error in a game like that is so small.”

Washington had a two-point lead going into the fourth quarter but was unable to hang on for the win.

“One of the things that jumped out to me after the game was they won the turnover margin 15-5,” Smith said. “And they scored 15 points off our turnovers.”

Jack McKimmey and Cole Beard led Washington’s scoring attack with 12 points each.

The Warriors are 6-11.
