Rolled through Regional tournament undefeated

The Washington Warriors moved on to the Super Regional (Area) tournament after going undefeated in their Regional tournament last week.

They defeated Star-Spencer (19-0) and Kellyville (14-0 and 2-1) in the two-day tournament.

The Super Regional is scheduled for Thursday against Cascia Hall at David Vallerand Field in Washington.

Washington beat Cascia Hall in the State finals last season.

They return multiple players off that team, which went 31-9 a season ago.

“Coach (Dean) Wilson does a great job with those guys,” head coach Jeff Kulbeth said.

Star-Spencer

Washington had no problems getting past Star-Spencer in the first game.

Easton Berglan barely missed out on a perfect game, while still throwing a no-hitter in his four-inning outing.

He hit one of the final batters to put a base runner on.

He managed to strike out 10 batters in the game.

“We pitched it really well,” Kulbeth said. “We only used three arms in the tournament with complete game.”

Washington scored three runs in the first inning and put up an eight spot in both the second and third.

Marlon Moore stayed hot at the plate and was 2-2, including a double,  with three RBIs and scored a pair of runs himself.

Berglan helped out his own cause at the plate while going 1-1 with three ribbies and two walks. He scored twice as well.

Kade Norman was 2-3 with a double and scored twice.

Kellyville

Washington played Kellyville later that afternoon and came away with the 14-0 win.

Pitching was phenomenal again with Tristin Babbitt striking out five batters over five innings in another no-hitter.

His only blemish was a walk in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Washington opened the game with a four-run first inning.

They tacked on two more in the third inning and hung a snowman on Kellyville in the fourth with eight runs.

Moore was 2-4 with four RBIs and a home run.

Owen Andrews was 2-3 with a double and three RBIs. He also walked.

Norman was 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

“Kade Norman has started to swing the bat really well,” Kulbeth said. “As a whole, up and down the lineup, the way we’re swinging it gives us a chance.”

‘Win the fight’

The second Kellyville game wasn’t as easy for the Warriors to close out, ending in a 2-1 victory.

Moore pitched a strong game in a seven-inning performance.

He struck out nine batters and allowed no earned runs.

Washington scored a run in both the first and second innings.

Dax McCaskill went 2-3 with a double. He scored one of Washington’s runs, with Mayson Thomas scoring the other.

Thomas was 1-2 with a triple.

Norman and Moore both had RBIs.

Kulbeth said his club hit the ball better than they got credit for.

“I couldn’t tell you how many balls we hit on the screws but we hit it right to them,” Kulbeth said. “We were hammering it with nothing to show. Sometimes you just have to figure out a way to win the fight.”

Washington is 29-4 this season.

“It’s playoff baseball and our guys know what that means and will rise to the occasion.”
