Washington’s boys and girls basketball teams picked up a pair of Conference wins over Purcell Monday evening at the Warrior Event Center.

The Washington girls outlasted Purcell down the stretch to come away with a 61-57 win.

Breanna Lindert led all scorers with 27 points.

The junior opened the game with a 12-point first quarter as the Warriors claimed a three-point lead early.

“Lindert was the hot hand early and the guards did a good job finding her,” head coach Kale Simon said.

The Warriors had an answer every time Purcell tried to make a run at the lead.

“I was proud of the way we found a way to win in the end,” Simon said. “Credit Purcell. We struggled to guard them.”

Kelby Beller joined Lindert in double figures with 12 points.

“We fought through foul trouble for the win and we know it wasn’t our best night,” Simon said.

Marlow

Washington took a 68-32 win over Marlow the Friday before.

“We guarded well and set a really good defensive tone in the game and it sped them up,” Simon said. “We hit some shots and that helped everything.”

Preslee Johnson hit four threes in the second half and led all scorers with 19 points.

She was joined in double figures by Lindert and Beller, who had 14 and 11 respectively.

“We were efficient in the game and moved the ball well,” Simon said. “We shared it better and made the extra pass to give up the good shot for the great shot.”

The Warriors have benefitted from having a four-headed scoring monster with Lindert, Beller, Johnson and Shelbie Caveness – who had nine points in the game.

Playoff basketball

Washington received a bye for the District tournament and will await the winner of Lexington and Crooked Oak in the Regional tournament.

They’ll play that game at 6 p.m. in Washington on Thursday, Feb. 22.

Washington will take the next week to practice and prepare to make another deep run in the State playoffs.

But Simon said his team isn’t looking too far ahead.

“We begin with the end in mind. Every day we’ll do our best and do all the little things that lead to big things,” he said. “To get there, we have to do the process and work on the day-in, day-out grind. We will get better each day.”

Washington is 20-3 this season and ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.

Boys

The Washington boys defeated Purcell 59-54 Monday night.

Washington sealed the victory with a strong fourth-quarter performance while holding the Dragons to only nine points.

Mason Adams led the Warriors in scoring with 18 points.

Jeremiah Tontz scored 14 and Teagen Foster had 10 points in the win.

Marlow

Washington fell to the Outlaws 64-59.

Foster led the Warriors in scoring with 13 points.

Tontz had 12 and Adams scored 11 points in the game.

Playoffs

The Warriors will host Dove Science Friday night at the Warrior Event Center at 6:30 p.m.

Dove Science is 5-4 this season.

Washington is 11-12.
