Warriors claim own tourney

Posted

The Washington softball team navigated a stacked field to win their own tournament Friday.

They defeated Blanchard (18-0), Hobart (20-10), Valliant (13-2), Latta (14-5) and Silo (27-26).

“The tournament went about as well as it’s gone in years,” said Washington head coach Jace Brewer. “We played some dang good softball against some dang good competition.”

It was a home run fest for much of the tournament. Six players homered against Blanchard – Elly Allison, Haven Brewer, Emma Curry (2), Kaile Kilmer, Ellie Loveless, Maggie Place (2).

“The wind was blowing out and that’s just how the game goes now (with all the runs),” Brewer said.

Hobart

Hobart jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning. Then Washington only managed one run in the second inning.

It wasn’t until the third inning that Washington’s offense opened up, scoring seven, but the game was still tied 8-8.

The Warriors scored four in the fourth and blew the game open with an 8-run fifth inning.

Allison, Curry, Kilmer and Place all homered.

Valliant

Washington won 13-2 over Valliant in the next game.

The Warriors held Valliant scoreless in two of four innings.

Washington scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back.

Allison and Place (2) homered.

Latta

Washington breezed by Latta 14-5.

The Warriors never trailed after scoring three runs in the first inning and one in the second. They put a punctuation on the game with an 8-run fifth inning before scoring two more in the sixth.

Latta didn’t score in four of six innings.

Allison, Curry (2), Loveless and Place homered.

Silo

It was a score-o-rama against Silo in the championship game.

Washington led 5-3 after the first inning and were cruising with a 7-run lead until the fourth when Washington failed to score. Silo cut it to three.

Washington beat their lead back up to seven in the fifth inning.

Each team scored two in the sixth inning and Silo scored six in the seventh inning. Washington didn’t need their last at bats and won by one run.

“We played the best ball that’s been played in Washington in years,” Brewer said. “From the Weatherford tournament to our tournament we came a long way. I hope they can keep their concentration day in and day out until the playoffs.”

Choctaw

Washington beat Choctaw 19-15 Monday.

“I’m happy with our attitude and the way we carry ourselves,” Brewer said. “Sometimes you just have to believe you’re good. Not in a cocky was but in a confident way.”
