The Washington baseball team has kept up their elevated play since their return from Gulf Shores, Ala., where they went 3-1.
Washington picked two District wins against Casady (13-1 and 15-3) and another against Anadarko (9-0).
In the middle of all that they also defeated Class 2A-2 No. 2 Tushka, 3-0.
Second-year head coach Brad Lucas likes where his team is at this point of the season.
“Overall, we’ve played really well,” he said. “Our loss during Spring Break was to a really good 6A team from the Tuscaloosa area.”
The Warriors returned nine seniors this season after losing only two from last year’s team in Koen Scarborough and Mayson Thomas.
“One of our strengths is our team leadership with all the seniors,” Lucas said. “They’ve been doing a good job.”
The Warriors also have the luxury of a deep pitching staff this season.
“We have 10 kids who I can put out there to pitch,” Lucas said. “Pitching and pitching depth is another strength for us.”
Washington has already pitched eight shutouts this season and have had several other games where opponents have only scored one run.
“This group plays really, really good fundamental defense,” Lucas said. “Our defense has kept us in some games this year.”
Offensively, Lucas said he has several players swinging the bat well, including Owen Andrews and Liam Keltner.
Owens is hitting above .500 and Keltner is seeing the ball well, batting at a clip of .392.
Lucas said there is room for improvement for his team on the offensive side.
“I’d like to see our approach at the plate get a little better,” he said. “I’d like for us to try to manufacture some runs and keep the offensive momentum.”
Aside from their District games this week, the Warriors will travel to Marlow for their festival.
They will play Marlow on Thursday, Elgin on Friday and North Rock Creek Saturday, as long as the weather allows.
“Overall, this is a really fun group to coach,” Lucas said. “It’s a really good group of guys who are good athletes and good baseball players. It’s been fun and we’ve been getting after people.”
