Vote Tuesday for county tax

Posted

Remember to vote Tuesday to fund county government for the years to come.

A yes vote to insure the one half cent county-wide sales tax permanently will provide the necessary funding to keep our county government fully functioning.

Obviously math has never been a strong suit for me, hence journalism school.

Once again my math, or lack there of, has jumped up and bit me.

County commissioner Wilson Lyles noted such in my column last week about the 1/2 cent sales tax.

Turns out the tax on a $100 purchase is just 50 cents and $5 on a purchase of $1,000.

Thanks, Wilson.

Purcell’s Public School Foundation needs your help.

The Foundation, which turned 34-years-old this year, funds grants for teacher projects and programs that are not under the umbrella of the school district’s general funding.

The true recipients of the grant funding are, of course,  the students themselves.

And, as the needs present themselves, the Foundation pays for items like risers for the choir and registration for educational conventions and more.

The way you can help is with the Foundation’s fund-raisers.

They will soon be selling tickets for a 50-50 drawing .

Another fund-raiser in the future is possibly a Little League basketball tournament.

You can read all about the annual county fair on the front page of this week’s Purcell Register.

But, here’s a little reminder to put it on your calendar for the next three days to enjoy all the activities.

Congratulations to the Purcell Baseball Softball Association for snagging a $25,000 grant from TruGreen Lawn Care in Oklahoma City for a complete make over of a Little Field at their complex just west of the airport.

Board member Hannah Gulledge sent in the application for the grant and told fellow board member Laura Smith she had actually forgotten about it until word came down that Purcell had actually won over entries from all 50 states.

Congrats to PBSA President Jerrod Klein and his entire board.

Maybe after they get one field fixed up others could follow.

With hotel accommodations available and the geographic location, Purcell could become a hot-bed for tournaments, which could be an economic boom for the entire area.
