Vehicle crashes while eluding

While working in the Goldsby area at 2:17 a.m. Monday McClain County Sheriff Deputy Beau Ogden observed a white Chevrolet Impala with a headlight out on the driver’s side.

When the deputy turned on his emergency lights to attempt a traffic stop, the Impala sped off getting into the northbound lanes of Interstate 35.

The suspect vehicle reached speeds of over 100 m.p.h. nearly striking another vehicle, the deputy said.

Deputy Ogden said the Impala exited at mile marker 108 onto SH 9. When the deputy crossed 24th Avenue he terminated the pursuit due to department policies, conditions and the current charges on the suspect.

Deputy Ogden continued driving east on SH 9 noticing the Impala was traveling at a high rate of speed and had turned off the vehicle’s lights.

Norman Police were notified of the situation. Deputy Ogden said he lost sight of the vehicle when he crossed Berry Road but as the deputy approached Chautauqua and SH 9 he observed the vehicle’s brake lights come on.

The suspect lost control of the vehicle as it approached Jenkins and SH 9 crashing and coming to rest on its top.

Deputy Ogden advised dispatch to start the fire department and EMS as well as police.

Ogden said he exited his patrol unit and found the driver still in the vehicle but unresponsive.

Norman Police and EMS arrived and pronounced the driver deceased on scene. Norman Police determined the vehicle had been entered as a stolen vehicle out of Duncan.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
