Two accidents cause problems

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol investigated two serious accidents in the Purcell area Monday afternoon and evening.

The first at mile marker 99 in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 closed the interstate for three hours and 37 minutes and has apparently claimed two lives.

The accident was reported at 4:41 p.m.

The OHP has not released any details about the accident but multiple sources have confirmed to The Purcell Register that two people were killed in the crossover crash.

The second crash occurred at 6:09 p.m. at SH 74 and Horse Avenue resulting in a multi-vehilce accident.

A 32-year-old female from Maysville was medi-flighted to OU Medical Center with head, leg and arm injuries. She was admitted in fair condition, according to the OHP.

Investigating Troopers Stout, Harmon and Byrne said a 2021 Hyundai SUV driven by Hailey Masterson, 22, of Oklahoma City was eastbound on 74 when her vehicle stopped in the lane of traffic.

A 2018 Ford Edge driven by Courtney Herrington, 25 of Purcell,  was eastbound behind a 2022 Ford F250 pickup driven by Billy DeSpain, 38 of Georgetown, TX.

Troopers reported the pickup swerved left to avoid striking the SUV and hit a 2008 Chevy Avalanche head-on.

The Avalanche driver’s name has not been released since next of kin have not been notified. That person is the one who was medi-flighted.

Herrington was transported to Purcell Municipal Hospital by Wadley’s EMS and was treated and released.

Masterson, DeSpain and a passenger in the Herrington vehicle all were not injured in the accident.

Also assisting at the accident scene were Purcell Police, McClain County Sheriff’s Department and Purcell Firefighters.
