Top news stories of 2019

The number one story for the calendar year 2019 was the total revamping and grand opening of Conger Field.

A bond issue provided funding for the artificial surface,  new stands on both sides, a new press box and field house with all new weight room equipment.

The complete opening of the James C. Nance Bridge, a sprawling four lane bridge complete with elements of the original bridge and a walking lane was 1A in the list of top news stories.

Coming in at number three was the passing of an eight year extension to the McClain County Sales Tax.

After failed attempts, Lexington’s School District overwhelmingly passed a bond issue. The measure passed by a margin of 85.27 percent.

A bond issue to construct a new McClain County Public Safety Complex was voted down.

Another top story was the resignation of Jason Midkiff as Superintendent of Purcell Schools setting the table for another top story, the hiring of Sheli McAdoo as the new Purcell Superintendent.

Susan Tarp’s retirement at First United Bank was a big news story. She was replaced by Eddie Clouse, who is originally from Blanchard.

Two vehicles were stolen at separate ends of Purcell on the same day, a very rare incident.

The passing of prominent Democrat Betty McElderry made news and the recent death of Ron Fishburn saddened many.
