Something for everyone

Lexington residents can be forgiven for pulling out all the stops for the town’s upcoming ‘89er Day Celebration on today (Thursday) through Saturday.

They are making up for time after the 2020 celebration fell victim to the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown.

As Oklahomans ease back into “normal” activities, festival organizers at the Lexington Chamber of Commerce have kick started that process with what some might deem too much to see and experience in just 12 hours. Sixteen if you count the carnival.

Advance carnival tickets are $10 for 15 tickets. Marking the opening of the carnival and official start of the festival, those ticket sales will end at 5 p.m. today at the following locations – Cole’s Plant Farm, Shan’s Kwik Korner, Lexington Gas & Go, America’s Quick Stop, Pearson’s Lumber, Rescue Nutrition, Lexington City Hall and Lexington Police Department.

Kiddie rides at the carnival are 1 ticket. All other rides require 4 or 5 tickets.

Entertainment on the pavilion stage Friday will include Amanda Coffee and Pops at 5  p.m., and Luke Haley at 7 p.m.

The festival will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday for more carnival fun and entertainment on the pavilion stage.

Celebration hours on Saturday will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a parade at noon.

Registration for the car show will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m., with judging at 11 a.m.

Prizes and bragging rights will be awarded for Best in Show, Best in Show Tractor, Best in Show Motorcycle.

There will also be classes for unfinished, SXS, classic car, modern car, classic truck, modern truck, off road vehicle, custom vehicle, hot rod, original, daily driver and entry by a high school student.

For more information on the car show, contact Charley Givens at (405) 708-8386.

Cash prizes are at stake in Saturday’s corn hole tournament and wiener dog races.

Registration for both competitions will be at 9 a.m.

The entry fee for the corn hole tournament is $40. The tournament will pay $200 for first place, $100 for second and $50 for third.

Play begins at 2 p.m. east of the fire station.

Tournament sponsors include Gustin’s Automotive, Rescue Nutrition, 405 Equipment, Cliff & Sons Overhead Doors, Hilltop Processing, WH Fleet, Baca Realty, Specialized Control Wiring and Levi Free.

The entry fee for the dog races is $5.

This 2 p.m. event is a jackpot race, meaning all entry fees will be awarded as prize money.

The dogs will run from one handler to a second handler along a 60-foot course.

The breed requirement – only Dachshunds or dogs showing Dachshund characteristics – eliminates large dogs from competing.

Trophies will be awarded to the top five finalists.

At 10 a.m. Saturday at the pavilion, a power lifting competition endorsed by the Natural Athlete Strength Association will begin.

Categories will  include squat, bench press, deadlift and curl.

The event is advertised as “steroid-free, steroid-tested.”

Lexington’s Show Choir , Southern Accents, will perform on the Pavilion Stage at 1 p.m.

Other performers on the stage will be Infinity Dance  minis and juniors at 10:30 a.m., IFA Academy Martial Arts  at 11 a.m., talent show at 2 p.m., Infinity Dance seniors at 3:30 p.m. and Oklahoma Moon  at 4 p.m.

The Tri-State Gunfighters will be back this year with multiple performances by the pavilion Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.

Other attractions will include a mechanical bull, music, Kids Zone, inflatables, petting zoo, talent show, food trucks, crafts and vendors.
