Red Hill stairs big project

A few folks have questioned a couple of details about the story we published about last week’s city council meeting.

One of the questions was where exactly is the new water tower going to be built?

It will be constructed at Bryant and SH 39.

After checking with assistant public works director Marcos Castillo and interim city manager Bobby Elmore The Register was told that property is basically in the vicinity of Union Hill Baptist Church.

Union Hill is on Bryant at SH 39.

Castillo reported despite the change in location there will be no difference in water pressure in the Purcell coverage area.

The wheels are in motion for the repair of the stairs on Red Hill.

A meeting was held Tuesday morning with prospective bidders on the project and Glenn Sullivan and Associates.

Sullivan met with the prospects at city hall and then the group took a tour of the stairs to begin the assessment of how to  begin the reconstruction process.

The stairs have been closed to the public for months after city employees detected erosion making the stairs unsafe for use.

They are used by many for exercise going up and down the historic Purcell landmark.

No time line was given at Tuesday’s meeting as to when the stairs will be repaired and restored for public use.

Needless to say, it’s going to be a major undertaking.
