Racking up District wins

Light week for Warriors, but fruitful

Washington earned three District wins after defeating Community Christian (10-0 and 19-2) and Little Axe (16-0).

Not only did the Warriors put up runs, they’re pitching and defense were stronger than it has been of late.

“We played better defense last week,” said Washington head coach Tylor Lampkin.

In the first win of the double header against CCS, Olivia Palumbo took to the circle for a one-hit outing.

She struck out 10 batters in four innings and allowed no walks.

The defense behind her was solid as well, committing only one error.

Ava Salcedo was 1-2 from the plate with a double. She knocked in an RBI and scored a run herself.

Addy Larman was 1-2 with a double.

Sophomore Emersyn Massey was 1-2 with a ribbie. She also scored a run.

Shelbie Caveness was 1-2 with two RBIs on a two-run in-the-park homer.

Daphne Palumbo tripled and was 1-2 with a walk. She had one RBI and scored a run of her own.

In the second game of the double header Emjay Lucas had the ball in the circle and put together a solid six strikeout performance.

Washington won 19-2.

The Warriors scored six runs in the first inning and went off for 13 in the second inning.

Salcedo was 1-2 with an inside-the-park home run. She also had a walk.

Massey was 3-3 with an inside-the-park homer as well.  Massey scored three runs and had four ribbies.

Alexis Gay hit two double while going 2-3 with three RBIs. She also scored a run.

Daphne Palumbo went 3-3 with three RBIs and had a triple.

Senior Halle Andrews went 2-2 with a pair of RBIs and crossed home plate three times herself.

“We did a better job of getting balls put in play that we needed to in big situations,” Lampkin said. “We focused on more productivity in practice.”

Little Axe

In Washington’s 16-0 win over Little Axe Salcedo had a nine strikeout performance in five innings.

She was 4-4 at the plate in the game with four RBIs.

Breanna Lindert and Salcedo had inside-the-park homers on consecutive at bats. Caveness, Emjay Lucas and Daphne Palumbo each hit triples and Lucas had two doubles in a 3-3 night.

“We’ve had good practices and we’re figuring things out on our own,” Lampkin said. “Our girls took a lot of ownership of things and they spent their own time in the cage.”

The Warriors are 16-7 this season.

They play in the Silo Tournament this weekend.

“We’ll have our hands full on that one,” Lampkin said. “Our pool will be tough and we’ll have to battle every day.”

A bracket is in this week’s Purcell Register.
